Decluttering a wardrobe feels overwhelming because every item comes with a story: what you paid, who gave it to you, the event you'll wear it to "one day." A clear process and a few honest questions make it much easier.
The process
- Pick a category (tops, then trousers…) rather than the whole closet at once.
- Take everything in that category out and lay it on the bed.
- Try on anything you're unsure about.
- Sort into four piles: keep, maybe, go, repair.
- Put the "maybe" pile in a box with a date. If you don't open it in three months, let it go.
10 questions for every item
- Have I worn it in the last 12 months?
- Does it fit me now (not in theory)?
- Do I feel good in it?
- Is it in good condition, or am I willing to repair it this month?
- Does it go with at least three other things I own?
- Would I buy it again today?
- Does it suit my current life, job and climate?
- Am I keeping it only because of what it cost?
- Do I own something similar that I prefer?
- If it disappeared, would I replace it?
If most answers point to "no," it can go.
What to do with what you remove
- Sell: good-condition and branded pieces on resale apps or consignment.
- Donate: clean, wearable items to local charities.
- Swap: clothing swaps with friends.
- Recycle: worn-out textiles at textile recycling points (check local options).
- Repair: take the repair pile to a tailor within a month, or it moves to "go."
Guilt is normal
Letting go of an expensive mistake hurts. But keeping it doesn't recover the money; it just takes space. Learning from it does. See cost per wear.
Keep it decluttered
- One in, one out.
- A seasonal mini-edit as you organize your closet.
- Build toward a capsule wardrobe so new purchases fit the system.

Frequently asked questions
How do I decide which clothes to get rid of?
Ask whether you've worn it in the past year, whether it fits now, whether it goes with other pieces and whether you'd buy it again.
How often should I declutter my wardrobe?
A full edit once or twice a year and a quick check each season works for most people.
What should I do with clothes I don't wear?
Sell, donate, swap with friends, recycle worn-out items, or repair pieces you'll actually wear.
