Cost Per Wear: The Simple Math That Changes How You Shop

What cost per wear is, how to calculate it, worked examples, why cheaper isn't always cheaper and how to use it to build a wardrobe you wear more.

By Ayoub Farid · · 2 min read

Cost per wear is the price of an item divided by how many times you wear it. It's a simple idea that changes the way you shop: the question shifts from "how much is it?" to "how much will I use it?"

The formula

Cost per wear = price ÷ number of wears

(Some people also add care costs like dry cleaning or repairs.)

Examples

ItemPriceWearsCost per wear
Trend top$303$10.00
Quality white tee$4080$0.50
Wool coat$300150 (5 winters)$2.00
Party dress$1202$60.00
Leather sneakers$150200$0.75

The "cheap" top costs more per wear than the expensive coat.

How to estimate wears before buying

  • How many times a week would you wear it in season?
  • How many weeks is it in season per year?
  • How many years will it last?

Example: a knit you wear twice a week for 20 weeks a year for 3 years ≈ 120 wears.

When cost per wear is misleading

  • Very expensive items may still be poor value if they need costly care.
  • Special occasion clothes will always have a high cost per wear: renting, borrowing or rewearing helps.
  • Trends have a shorter lifespan; buy fewer or wear trends from your closet.

Lower the cost per wear of what you own

The cheapest way to improve the number is to wear what you have more often:

Cost per wear for the whole closet

You can also look at your wardrobe as a whole: what you spend on clothes in a year divided by the number of days you get dressed. Wearing more of what you own and buying fewer one-off pieces lowers that number faster than hunting for discounts.

Try it with your own closet

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate cost per wear?

Divide the item's price by the number of times you wear it. Add care and repair costs for a fuller picture.

What is a good cost per wear?

There's no fixed number. Everyday basics can drop below $1 per wear; aim for pieces you'll wear dozens of times.

Is buying expensive clothes worth it?

If they're good quality and you'll wear them often, they can cost less per wear than cheap clothes worn a few times.
