How to Organize Your Closet So You Actually Wear Your Clothes

How to organize your closet in one afternoon: empty, edit, group by category and color, use the right hangers and storage, and keep it tidy with simple habits.

A well-organized closet isn't about looking like a shop. It's about seeing everything you own, reaching it easily and putting it back without effort. Here's how to do it in an afternoon.

Step 1: Empty it (yes, all of it)

Take everything out. It's the only way to see how much you own and clean the space.

Step 2: Edit

Sort into keep, maybe, donate/sell, repair. Be honest about fit and how often you wear things. Our decluttering guide has the questions to ask.

Step 3: Group by category

Within the closet, group:

  • Outerwear
  • Blazers and jackets
  • Shirts and blouses
  • Knits (folded, not hung: they stretch)
  • Trousers and skirts
  • Dresses
  • Tees and casual tops (folded or in drawers)

Step 4: Then by color

Within each category, go light to dark. It looks calm and makes it easy to spot gaps and duplicates.

Step 5: Prime real estate for what you wear most

Eye-level and front: your current season's most-worn pieces. High shelves and the back: off-season and special occasion.

Step 6: Use the right storage

  • Slim matching hangers save space and look tidy.
  • Folded knits on shelves or in drawers.
  • Drawer dividers for underwear, socks, accessories.
  • Shoe racks or clear boxes so pairs are visible.
  • Hooks for bags and belts.

Step 7: Store off-season clothes

Vacuum bags or boxes under the bed or on top shelves. Rotate at the start of each season and edit again while you do.

Keep it organized

  • One in, one out for new purchases.
  • Hang it back the same day.
  • Five-minute reset once a week.
  • Turn hangers backwards at the start of a season; anything still backwards after six months is a candidate to go.

Go digital too

A physical closet shows you what's there; a digital closet shows you what goes together. Photograph your organized wardrobe into Wardrobely and it turns it into daily outfits. That's the step that finally fixes "nothing to wear."

Small closet tips

  • Use slim velvet hangers to fit more in the same rail.
  • Add a second hanging rail for shirts and skirts.
  • Store bags inside each other.
  • Use the back of the door for hooks or a shoe organizer.
  • Keep only the current season in the closet; everything else goes in labeled boxes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best way to organize a closet?

Empty it, edit what you don't wear, group by category, then sort by color, and put the most-worn items at eye level.

Should sweaters be hung or folded?

Folded. Hanging can stretch knits and create shoulder bumps.

How often should I reorganize my closet?

Do a quick reset weekly and a full edit each season when you swap clothes.
