How to Tuck a Shirt: Full, Half (French) and Military Tucks

How to tuck a shirt or sweater: full tuck, half or French tuck, military tuck and when to leave it untucked, with tips for jeans, trousers, skirts and knitwear.

How you tuck changes how an outfit looks: neater, more relaxed, more defined. Here are the main tucks and when to use them.

Full tuck

Tuck the whole shirt into your waistband.

  • Best for: office, smart outfits, high-rise trousers and skirts.
  • Tip: pull the shirt slightly up after tucking so it blouses just a little and lets you move.

Half tuck (French tuck)

Tuck only the front (a few centimeters) and leave the back and sides out.

  • Best for: casual and smart casual outfits, sweaters, oversized shirts, tees.
  • Why it works: defines the waist without looking stiff.
  • How: tuck the front center into the waistband, pull a little fabric back out so it drapes, leave the sides loose.

Side tuck

Tuck one side, leave the other out. Relaxed and slightly asymmetrical. Works with oversized tees and shirts.

Military tuck

For a fitted, smooth look under a suit:

  1. Tuck the shirt in.
  2. Pinch the excess fabric at each side seam.
  3. Fold it back toward your back and hold it.
  4. Pull up your trousers and fasten the belt.

Tucking sweaters

  • Fine knits: full or half tuck into high-rise trousers or skirts.
  • Chunky knits: half tuck only the front, or leave out and belt over it.

When to leave it untucked

  • Shirts with a straight hem designed to be worn out (camp collars, overshirts).
  • Hems that end around mid-fly or hip.
  • Very relaxed outfits where the tuck feels fussy.

A dress shirt with long tails should almost always be tucked.

Tucking with different bottoms

  • High-rise jeans and trousers: full or half tuck both work well.
  • Low-rise jeans: a half tuck usually looks more balanced than a full tuck.
  • Skirts: a full tuck defines the waist; add a belt for structure.
  • Wide-leg trousers: tuck to balance the volume below.

Shorter tops that end at the waistband don't need tucking at all.
