Layering is both practical (adjusting to temperature) and stylish (adding depth and texture). Done well, it multiplies the outfits you can make from the same pieces.
The three layers
- Base: close to the body. Tee, tank, thin turtleneck, shirt, thermal.
- Mid: warmth and style. Knit, cardigan, vest, overshirt, sweatshirt.
- Outer: protection. Coat, trench, jacket, puffer.
Layering rules that look good
Thin to thick
Lightweight layers underneath, bulkier ones on top. A chunky knit under a slim blazer doesn't work; a thin merino does.
Short to long
Each layer slightly longer as you go out: tee, then a slightly longer shirt, then a hip-length jacket, then a long coat. Or deliberately reverse it (a shirt hem peeking under a cropped knit).
Mix textures
Cotton, knit, wool, leather, denim. Texture keeps neutral layers interesting.
Show a little of each layer
A collar above a crewneck, a cuff under a sleeve, a hem under a sweater.
Combinations to try
Fall
- Tee + flannel shirt (open) + field jacket
- Shirt + knit vest + blazer
- Turtleneck + slip dress + trench
Winter
- Thermal + chunky knit + wool coat + scarf
- Shirt + cardigan + puffer
- Turtleneck + blazer + overcoat
Spring
- Tee + denim jacket + light trench
- Tank + open linen shirt
- Shirt + sweater over shoulders
Layering for temperature
Choose layers you can remove and carry easily: cardigans tie around the waist, light jackets fold into a bag. See fall outfit ideas and winter outfit ideas.
Common mistakes
- Too many bulky layers
- All layers the same length
- All layers the same texture and color (can look flat)
Layering for men vs women
Men: tee under an overshirt, oxford under a crewneck, knit under a blazer or overcoat. Keep collars and cuffs visible.
Women: turtleneck under a slip dress, shirt under a sweater vest, cardigan over shoulders, long coat over a short jacket. Play with lengths for interest.
For both, three layers is usually enough. More than that tends to look bulky indoors.

Frequently asked questions
How do I layer clothes without looking bulky?
Use thin base layers, one mid layer and a well-fitting outer layer; avoid stacking multiple thick pieces.
What is the correct order for layering?
Base layer (tee, shirt), mid layer (knit, cardigan, vest), then outer layer (coat, jacket).
Can you layer a shirt under a sweater?
Yes. Let the collar and a bit of the cuffs and hem show for a polished look.
