10-Piece Wardrobe: How Many Outfits Can You Really Make?

The 10-piece wardrobe math: how 10 well-chosen items make 30+ outfits, a sample list for women and men, and how layers and shoes multiply the combinations.

Ten pieces sounds tiny. But if they're chosen to work together, the number of outfits is surprisingly large. Here's the math and a sample list.

The basic math

Outfits = tops × bottoms (× layers × shoes, if you count those).

  • 5 tops × 3 bottoms = 15 top-and-bottom combinations
  • Add 2 layers (wear one, the other or none): 15 × 3 = 45
  • Add 2 pairs of shoes as part of the 10? You'd have fewer tops, but more variety per outfit.

In practice not every combination works, so expect 60–80% to be wearable. Still, 30+ outfits from 10 items is realistic.

A 10-piece list (women)

Tops: white tee, striped top, cream knit, white shirt Bottoms: straight jeans, black trousers, midi skirt Layers: blazer, trench Dress: black slip dress (works alone or with the knit on top) Plus two pairs of shoes you already own.

A 10-piece list (men)

Tops: white tee, navy tee, oxford shirt, navy crewneck, knit polo Bottoms: dark jeans, beige chinos, grey trousers Layers: overshirt, navy blazer Plus white sneakers and brown boots.

What makes 10 pieces work

  • One palette. If everything is navy, white, grey and camel, almost every pairing works.
  • No orphans. Each top must go with every bottom, or nearly.
  • Mixed formality. A blazer and a tee let you dress up and down.
  • Good shoes that go with everything.
