Packing light isn't about suffering through a trip with too few clothes. It's about bringing only what you'll actually wear. A carry-on is enough for a week or more if you plan.
Step 1: Plan outfits before you pack
List each day and evening with what you'll be doing. Plan an outfit for each, reusing pieces. Pack only those. This alone usually cuts luggage in half.
Step 2: One color palette
Two neutrals plus one accent means every top goes with every bottom and you need one pair of smart shoes, one bag and one jacket.
Step 3: Use the 5-4-3-2-1 method (for a week)
- 5 tops
- 4 bottoms (or 3 + a dress)
- 3 pairs of shoes (including the pair you wear)
- 2 swimsuits or accessories
- 1 hat or layer
Adjust for climate. A travel capsule wardrobe shows full examples.
Step 4: Choose fabrics that travel
- Merino wool: resists odor, can be worn several times.
- Knits and jersey: don't wrinkle much.
- Linen: light, but wrinkles (embrace it or steam in the bathroom).
- Avoid bulky cotton knits and stiff fabrics.
Step 5: Wear your bulkiest items
Coat, boots, chunky knit and jeans go on your body, not in the bag. See airport outfits.
Step 6: Pack smart
- Roll soft items; fold structured ones.
- Packing cubes by category.
- Shoes in bags, stuffed with socks.
- Decant toiletries into travel bottles.
Step 7: Plan laundry
For trips over a week, plan one sink wash or laundry stop. Quick-drying fabrics help.
Common overpacking traps
- "Just in case" outfits
- One pair of shoes per outfit
- Multiple coats
- Too many evening looks: one or two is enough
Sample one-week list (carry-on)
Five tops, three bottoms, one dress or smart shirt, one light layer, two pairs of shoes plus the pair you wear, underwear for four days with a laundry plan, sleepwear and a small toiletry bag. Everything in one palette.
