Interview Outfit: What to Wear to a Job Interview in 2026

What to wear to a job interview for corporate, business casual, creative and remote video interviews, with outfit ideas for men and women and what to avoid.

The interview outfit rule is simple: dress one level above what employees wear day to day. It shows effort without looking out of place. Here's how to apply it.

Find out the dress level

Check the company's careers page, social media and team photos. Ask the recruiter if unsure. They expect the question.

Corporate (finance, law, consulting)

Women: a suit (trousers or skirt) in navy, black or grey, a blouse or fine knit, closed-toe heels or polished flats. Men: a navy or charcoal suit, white or light blue shirt, simple tie, black or dark brown leather shoes.

Business casual (most offices)

Women: tailored trousers or a midi skirt, blouse or knit, blazer, loafers or low heels. Men: chinos or wool trousers, oxford shirt, optional blazer, leather shoes. A tie is usually unnecessary.

Creative and tech

Anyone: a smart version of everyday: clean dark jeans or trousers, a good knit or shirt, an overshirt or blazer, clean leather sneakers or boots. Show some personality through one detail rather than the whole outfit.

Video interviews

  • Only the top half shows, but wear real trousers (you might stand up).
  • Solid colors work better on camera than tight patterns.
  • Avoid pure white and pure black if your camera struggles with contrast.
  • Check lighting and background in advance.

What to avoid

  • Wrinkled clothes: iron or steam the night before
  • New shoes that hurt
  • Strong fragrance
  • Very loud colors or patterns, unless they're central to the role
  • Bags that look overstuffed

The night before

  1. Lay out the full outfit including socks and bag.
  2. Try it on and sit down in it.
  3. Check for loose buttons, stains and lint.

Final check before you leave

Shoes polished, outfit lint-free, nothing too tight when you sit, phone and copies of your CV in a tidy bag.

Try it with your own closet

Ask Wardrobely's AI stylist, "Interview at a design agency, I want to look polished but not corporate," and it suggests an outfit from your own clothes. Preview it with virtual try-on, and if you need a wider wardrobe for the new job, see the work capsule wardrobe.
